Richard the third opinion

I liked Richard the Third, Richard was so immensely evil that he was almost comical in times due to his relentless wickedness. It was probably my favorite of the Shakespeare that we read, it was also interesting since it was a history and to some extent true. Probably not to the dramatic effect that Shakespeare went to but we can assume that Richard the third was an evil king in the English monarchy.

Interestingly enough, Richard III in real life was a well-liked and highly regarded figure. He was generally thought of as a fair and just ruler, and was particularly popular in York. The main reason that Shakespeare spoke so lowly of him and portrayed Richard in such a manner is because at the time "Richard III" was written, Queen Elizabeth reigned. She abhorred Richard (family conflict/war). For Shakespeare to depict him in a manner that contradicts the Queen's opinion would be quite fatuous. The character of Richard was more indicative of Queen Elizabeth's opinion of him than the way he actually was. Not even The Bard is unbiased...
